ST. CLAIRSVILLE, OH. — Seniors Brent Price and Owen Gainer paced Wheeling Central to a 59-43 win over Union Local (Ohio) in the OVAC 3A championship game on Saturday.

“They had such great shooters and I thought overall to hold them to 43 points was a pretty good defensive effort,” said Central coach Mel Stephens. “Owen (Gainer) got the ball in the middle of their zone a couple of times and hit some jumpers. That enabled us to get a lead and then we made enough plays in the second half to stay ahead.”

Owen Gainer scored 12 points in Wheeling Central’s OVAC 3A championship win.

Price scored 13 points, including a late-game, emphatic slam dunk, while Gainer added 12 points for the Maroon Knights (18-2). Senior Cedric Williams and freshman J.C. Maxwell both contributed 10 points apiece in the win as well.

Union Local entered Saturday’s matchup with 17 wins on the season.

“This was a big test, even Tuesday against Fort Frye,” Stephens said. “Those are two teams that are disciplined and execute. We had to be able to come out and execute a game plan against both of those teams.”

Central Catholic will close out its regular season Wednesday against Linsly, prior to sectional play beginning next week.

“I think we’re where we need to be right now,” Stephens said. “We have a group of seniors that knows the end of the road is coming for them, so I think they’ll be focused and lead those younger guys.”
