Charges filed in fatal auto vs. pedestrian crash

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Charges have been filed in a deadly vehicle vs. pedestrian accident in Morgantown that claimed the life of a West Virginia University student.

Leah Berhanu, 21, of Monongalia County, died from injuries she sustained when she was hit by an SUV while crossing Patteson Drive at the intersection with Morrill Way.

Michelle Gelada, 20, of New York, has been charged with negligent homicide. Gelada surrendered to Morgantown Police Thursday morning and was pending arraignment.

Investigators determined that Berhanu was walking in the crosswalk at the intersection when Gelada ran a red light, striking Berhanu.

The incident was one of three vehicle pedestrian accidents in Morgantown during the month of February. Another WVU student, Sarah Queen, 20, was critically injured when she was hit by a car while trying to cross Monongahela Boulevard.

On Monday, a man attending a WVU basketball game was hit on Monongahela Boulevard and suffered non-life threatening injuries.
