CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office announced Friday a McDowell County fire department has shut down.

The agency said an investigation was prompted after deficiencies at the Northfork Volunteer Fire Department were brought to their attention via a complaint. Violations included defective and out-of-date equipment and lack of personnel.

In the meantime, Northfork residents will be served by the Keystone, Anawalt, Bramwell, Matoaka and Kimball volunteer fire departments. Service to the affected areas will not be interrupted.

If the department corrects all violations, it will be allowed to resume operations. It officially ceased all operations on Thursday.
