LOOKOUT, W.Va. — Two people are behind bars after a two year-old was found neglected in a Fayette County motel room.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department said they responded to the Hillcrest Motel Monday at around noon for a welfare check. Upon arrival, they found the child with a serious head injury along with other signs of abuse. The child was taken to Plateau Area Medical Center, then Charleston Area Medical Center for treatment.

Miranda Lilly, 34 of Ansted, and her roommate Jesse Springstead, 35 of Lookout, have both been arrested. Lilly has been identified as the child’s mother. They each face a felony count of Child Neglect Creating Risk of Serious Injury.

“This poor child is in pretty bad shape, we pray that it makes a full recovery,” said Fayette County Sheriff Mike Fridley. “It’s a shame that children have to suffer this way, and we will try everything possible to make sure this baby will not be exposed to this again.”

Additional charges may follow pending a full medical report from the hospital. Lilly and Springstead are denying responsibility for any physical abuse.

They are being held at the Southern Regional Jail in Raleigh County unable to post $40,000 bond.
