Paine proposes two-day summit on improving school performance

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Steve Paine has proposed a two-day event with teachers, state leaders and local officials on how they can work together to address problems in education.

Paine announced the proposal before the West Virginia Board of Education at its monthly meeting on Wednesday.

“I want teachers to understand just how much we appreciate them but (also) to point out things we think need to happen to move education forward,” he said. “That means we need their joint participation in this as well and listen to them.”

Paine’s announcement comes a week after teachers and school personnel across the state returned to the classroom following a nine-day strike. The return was in return for a five percent pay raise for all state employees as well as a task force dedicated to fixing problems with health insurance provided by the Public Employees Insurance Agency.

“I think there’s more unity within the educational system today than I’ve seen for a long, long time,” Paine told the board. “There was a lot of discussion about filing an injunction to stop the work stoppage. I only think that would have added gasoline to the fire and frankly, you all told me the same thing and I’ve heard that across the way as well.”

Paine said there are issues local and state governments must address regarding school performance, and everyone needs to be involved in the process of creating improved policy.

“I grew up under the same research that there are behaviors that can overcome instructional variables that kids bring to the table, but we have to help our people understand what those variables are and strategies for beating those variables,” he said.

Although he did not announce any possible dates, Paine said he wants the board and Gov. Jim Justice to take part in the event if it happens.
