Mountaineers cruise into third round of WNIT

Naomi Davenport scored 18 points as West Virginia advanced in the WNIT with a 79-51 victory over Saint Joseph’s on Sunday

 

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Naomi Davenport’s 18 points led four starters in double figures as West Virginia downed Saint Joseph’s 79-51 in the second round of the WNIT on Sunday.

Kristina King shot 7-of-9 for 15 points and Teana Muldrow posted her 14th double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Katrina Pardee added 15 points for the Mountaineers (23-11), who forced 22 turnovers.

Chelsea Woods scored 15 to pace Saint Joseph’s (19-15).

“Defensively, I thought we started the game very up the lanes and took them out of their stuff,” WVU coach Mike Carey said.

Chania Ray dished out five assists for West Virginia, which will host James Madison in the third round Thursday.

“We have James Madison coming here, which is playing very well right now, so we will have our hands full,” Carey said.

West Virginia freshman forward Destiny Harden tied her career high for the second straight game with eight points, going 4-of-5 from the field.

WVU shot 50 percent from the field, 41 percent from 3 and 16-for-17 at the foul line.

“I am very proud of our team yo make it this far, to win a first-round game and to be able to come in here and compete with, what I think is an NCAA team in West Virginia,” said Hawks coach Cindy Griffin.
