WVU’s sweep attempt falls short in 9th

West Virginia pitcher Kade Strowd struggled with control Sunday in a 4-2 loss to Canisius.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia stranded the potential tying and go-ahead runs in the ninth inning and fell 4-3 to Canisius on Sunday, missing a chance to sweep the three-game series.

Down to two runs in their final at-bat, the Mountaineers (9-9) cut the lead in half on Braden Zarbnisky’s single. With runners on the corners, Brandon White grounded out to end an 0-for-5 day.

The Golden Griffins (11-6) rebounded after losing the first two games 10-9 and 2-0.

West Virginia starter Kade Strowd (2-2) walked five batters in 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs. Five relievers tacked on seven more walks.

JP Stevenson (3-0) needed just 88 pitches to get through seven innings for Canisius. He left with a 4-2 lead after Isaiah Kearns led off the seventh with a stand-up triple to right center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Gray.
