Attorney general targets elder abuse and exploitation with new unit

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey announced a new program on Thursday to combat those looking to take advantage of the elderly.

The Elder Abuse Litigation and Prevention Unit will consist of attorneys and investigators aiming at protecting senior citizens by use of a hotline and scam alert database.

Morrisey met with nurses and health professionals at Panhandle Home Health in Martinsburg to discuss the needs of the elderly and how this new service would help point patients in the right direction if they have questions.

Morrisey said it was important to hear from health professionals on the topic as they deal with issues stemming from elder abuse every day.

“We want to learn some of what is going on and what they are dealing with,” he said. “I think our hotline is going to be very valuable because frequently people simply lack the knowledge on who to turn to.”

Morrisey said the unit’s hotline is operational at 304-558-1155 or at HelpForSeniors@wvago.gov
