DOH to host meetings this week on I-64 project

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Officials with the Division of Highways will host meetings this week in Putnam and Cabell counties regarding one of the first projects of the Roads to Prosperity program.

Division of Highways spokesman Brent Walker described the project as a “rehabilitation” of Interstate 64, which will involve breaking down the roadway before resurfacing.

“It really helps support the base and makes for a stronger base. We’re doing more than just milling out an inch and a half and repaving it,” he said. “We’re really going down to the base and making a really meaningful repair to this.”

Meetings will be held Monday and Thursday at Hurricane City Hall and Milton Middle School respectively. Both meetings will go between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., and officials will have the opportunity to answer questions about the related work as well as the types of delays people will face.

According to Walker, one lane in each direction will be closed in each direction and then switched. He added later in the project, a different traffic control pattern will be put into place in the busy interstate.

“Not only is this happening, but there are other projects around the state that will be happening as a result of this Roads to Prosperity program,” he said. “We’d rather say it’s just going to be slow moving.”

Construction on this project is scheduled to begin during the second week of April.
