One dead after multi-city pursuit

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A multi-city police pursuit Thursday afternoon ended in a shooting with the suspect dead.

Rodney Toler, 39, of Charleston, led police through Dunbar, South Charleston and Charleston’s West Side before crashing into a truck at Charleston Auto. According to Lt. Autumn Davis, public information officer for the Charleston Police Department, a Dunbar police officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop near the Dunbar Toll Bridge on the red Toyota Camry that Toler was driving.

Toler drove into South Charleston on MacCorkle Avenue, which is where South Charleston police got involved in the chase.

After Toler crashed into a semi-truck at Charleston Auto on Hunt Avenue, he got out of the vehicle and began firing a gun at police. Officers returned fire, killing Toler.

“No officers or innocent bystanders were injured during this shooting incident, and the officers that were involved in the shooting were from the South Charleston Police Department,” Davis said.

The name of the officers involved in the shooting were not released.

Davis said Toler was familiar to police, but would not comment any further.
