DEVELOPING: Pedestrian injured after being hit by train in Monongalia County

WESTOVER, W.Va. — A fully loaded coal train traveling northbound hit a 35-year-old man along the tracks on the Monongahela River Wednesday morning.

The unnamed victim is in Ruby Memorial Hospital with “serious injuries,” according to Monongalia County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Al Kisner.

It is unclear how the accident occurred, which was reported around 9:53 a.m. this morning.

The train belonged to Norfolk Southern Railway. Press spokesperson John Glass said company employees attempted to coerce the pedestrian off the tracks, but claim he did not respond to their calls.

The train resumed it’s route around 12:15 p.m.

The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department is securing the scene.

Investigators from the company’s Pittsburgh regional division are en route.

This is a developing story and will be updated throughout the day.
