CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Class AAA No. 2 St. Albans and No. 3 Washington were a couple of many high school baseball teams from the state that spent the past week in Myrtle Beach, participating in various brackets in the Mingo Bay Classic.
The Red Dragons and Patriots both competed against stiffer competition in Division I, posting 3-2 records apiece for the week.
St. Albans, the Class AAA defending state champion, overall returns to West Virginia with a 7-4 record as Nic Feazelle (.474), Wes Medley (.450) and Chase Matheny (.424) have all led the Red Dragons at the plate early on.
WVU commit Jake Carr missed time early in the season with a medical procedure, but in six games back has hit .333 and thrown four innings on the mound — he picked up the win in Friday’s 5-2 12-inning victory for the Red Dragons over Myrtle Beach. Matheny had the go-ahead two-RBI double in the top of the 12th in that win as well.
Nick Loftis (1-0) enters the week with a 0.67 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 21 innings, while Matheny (2-1) has a 1.69 ERA and 29 strikeouts in just under 21 innings himself.
St. Albans is scheduled to get back into action this week on Monday at South Charleston (4-4).
Washington, meanwhile, returned a significant core from its state tournament team last year and enters this week 5-2 overall.
Spencer Delawder has been the leader at the plate for Washington, entering this week with a .522 batting average, nine RBIs and 11 runs scored in seven games. Culen Watson (.375) and Nathan Kerr (.333) are both over .300 in the early going as well.
In a 16-5 win Friday over Bishop O’Connell (Va.), Delawder went 3 for 3 with four RBIs and three runs scored — that included a three-run home run in the first inning.
The Patriots are scheduled to begin the week back in West Virginia on the road at Hedgesville (7-6) Tuesday night.
St. Albans and Washington met in the semifinals of the state tournament a year ago — a 16-6 win for the Red Dragons.
