CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Charleston man accused of hanging a dog last week in Charleston turned himself in Wednesday.

Police said John Copening Jr., 23, is responsible for killing a female pit bull on April 3.

The body of the animal was found hanging by a chain near Madison Street on the city’s West Side. A humane officer responded to the scene after neighbors called about hearing a dog squealing.
