PITTSBURGH — Chase Illig’s single in the 10th inning gave West Virginia a 3-2 walk-off win against Penn State on Tuesday night at PNC Park.
The Mountaineers (14-15) improved to 2-0 at the ballpark.
Illig’s hit scored Darius Hill after the Nittany Lions (7-19) tied the game in the ninth inning thanks to Andrew Zitel’s two-out error.
San Kessler (2-0) earned the win in relief, getting a groundout to leave the bases loaded in the top of the 10th.

Zitel’s RBI single gave the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead in the first before the offense turned quiet.
Penn State scored a run in the third against WVU starter Jackson Wolf, who went five innings and struck out five.
Hill led off the bottom half of the 10th with a single against Kyle Virbitsky (0-1), Penn State’s sixth pitcher of the night. After a sac bunt, Mason Mellot came on and induced a pop up before Illig, the DH, knocked a 3-1 pitch into left-center.
“He was pretty calm up there,” Randy Mazey said of Illig. “They were playing super shallow, trying to throw a runner out at the plate. He just managed to find a gap.”
