Rehab project coming to busy stretch of I-77

PRINCETON, W.Va. — Your trip to and from Myrtle Beach this year will probably be slowed some by a total rehabilitation project planned on I-77 between Princeton and Bluefield.

Transportation Secretary Tom Smith

The state Division of Highways has a public informational meeting set for Monday to discuss it.

The meeting will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Princeton City Hall.

According to the DOH, residents will be able to learn the scope of the project, tentative dates, traffic control details and how the work can be monitored.

The DOH is doing several of these types of projects under the new Roads to Prosperity program. Work began on a stretch of I-64 between Crooked Creek and Milton in Putnam and Cabell counties two weeks ago.

The rehab projects strip off layers of asphalt to the base and then use a process to strengthen the base before placing down up to 9 inches of new asphalt.

“This is an exciting time within the Division of Highways as we begin to roll out the major projects as part of Governor Justice’s Roads to Prosperity program,” Secretary of Transportation Tom Smith said in a news release.  “It is important that we communicate as much information as we can, to the traveling public, about the impact these projects will have on traffic and this public informational meeting will do just that.”
