McKinley, Jenkins sign letter nominating Trump for Nobel Peace Prize

WASHINGTON — U.S. Reps. David McKinley and Evan Jenkins signed a letter dated Wednesday nominating President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for what was described as “his work to end to the Korean War, denuclearize the Korean peninsula, and bring peace to the region.”

McKinley and Jenkins were joined by 16 lawmakers, all House Republicans, in signing the letter intended for the Nobel Peace Prize Committee chairman Berit Reiss-Andersen regarding Trump’s efforts.

“Although North Korea has evaded demands from the international community to cease its aggressions for decades, President Trump’s peace through strength policies have worked and brought peace to the Korean Peninsula,” the legislators wrote. “We can think of no one more deserving of the Committee’s recognition in 2019 than President Trump for his tireless work to bring peace to our world.”

The lawmakers pointed to sanctions placed on North Korea, the announced end of the country’s nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missile testing programs and the meeting last week between North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in as actions supporting their nomination.

Moon said earlier this week Trump deserved the Noble Peace Prize if an award is given out for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
