Defending champ St. Albans beats Capital in sectional play

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. — Class AAA defending state champion St. Albans opened up its 2018 postseason with a 6-2 win over Capital in sectional play.

West Virginia University recruit Jake Carr led the No. 4 Red Dragons (22-9) by going 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Nick Loftis and Noah Cummings also had two hits apiece for St. Albans as well. Chayce Matheny picked up the complete game win on the mound, giving up two runs on eight hits and striking out six.

Cam Thomas went 3 for 4 from the plate in the loss with an RBI and a run scored for Capital (10-12), while Grant Thompson and Ryan Thomas both added two hits apiece as well.

St. Albans is scheduled to face South Charleston Tuesday, while Capital will face George Washington in an elimination contest.
