Deadly hit and run case headed to Putnam grand jury

WINFIELD, W.Va. — A Putnam County grand jury will hear murder charges against a man charged with intentionally using his car to kill another man.

A magistrate heard evidence in a Thursday preliminary hearing in the case of Morgan Vandergriff, 37, of Hurricane.

Vandergriff was charged with murder after a May 10 collision in Ranch Lake Estates in Scott Depot claimed the life of John Maynard, 38. Maynard was yelling and motioning to Vandergriff to slow down, when he was deliberately run over, witnesses said.

A school bus driver and resident testified Thursday they saw Vandergriff swerve his car into the driveway where Maynard was standing waiting for his daughter to get off the school bus. Vandergriff didn’t initially stop following the collision.

A magistrate ruled there was probable cause to forward the case to a grand jury.

Vandergriff remains in the West Regional Jail without bail.
