NEOLA, W.Va. — Black mold has been discovered at the Anthony Correctional Center in Greenbrier County, the state Division of Corrections announced Friday.
The mold was found in the center’s main building. State Corrections Commissioner Betsy Jividen decided to transfer the 200 young-adult offenders to other correctional facilities while an inspection into the issue continues.
According to the DOC, the women inmates are being moved to the Lakin Correctional Center in Mason County and the men to the Parkersburg and Denmar (Pocahontas County) correctional centers. The transfers began Friday.
Some of the staff members are also being moved. The Division of Corrections said it hoped to be able to keep the workers close to home.
Corrections is working with the state Bureau of Public Health on the mold issue.
“Neither staff nor inmates have exhibited any symptoms of exposure, but monitoring will continue,” a Division of Corrections news release said.
The release said a final inspection report will help Corrections “identify the best course for the future of Anthony.”
The Anthony Center was built in 1965. It houses a program for youthful offenders who sentences average from six months to two years.
