Late-game heroics send Herbert Hoover back to AA title game

VIENNA, W.Va. — Looking for a second straight state championship — and perhaps a perfect season as well — Herbert Hoover won a pair of softball state tournament games on Wednesday, battling through long delays and a pitchers’ battle late-night.

The Huskies (32-0) completed the day’s first game, beating Petersburg 5-1 as poor field conditions overall pushed back games in all three classes.

The shuffling around (and limited fields for part of the day) meant that Herbert Hoover also played in the final game Wednesday, outlasting Chapmanville 1-0 in a contest that ended after midnight.

Notes are below from Wednesday’s Class AA action:

Game 1: Herbert Hoover 5, Petersburg 1

  • Delani Buckner finished with nine strikeouts to lead the defending champs to an opening round win over Petersburg. Mallori Chapman went 2 for 4 in the win as well for the Huskies, scoring a pair of runs.

Game 2: Chapmanville Regional 5, Wyoming East 3

  • Chapmanville used a four-run third inning to take control of the game. Kenzie McCann picked up the complete game win, striking out 14 and giving up the three runs on five hits.

Game 3: Petersburg 7, Wyoming East 0 — Wyoming East eliminated

  • Needing a win to stay alive, Petersburg bounced back from its setback to Herbert Hoover early in the day with a 7-0 shutout win over Wyoming East. With the bases loaded, a hit-batter, walk and wild-pitch extended Petersburg’s lead from 4-0 out to 7-0 in the sixth.

Game 4: Herbert Hoover 1, Chapmanville Regional 0

  • In a rematch of last year’s state championship game — and a matchup of the last two Class AA state championship programs — Herbert Hoover prevailed 1-0. An RBI-single from Taylor Carpenter drove in Cortney Fizer for the game’s only run in the top of the 7th.
