Graves wins after Kanawha County recount

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — After a recount of votes made in Kanawha County for the May 8 primary, Delegate Diana Graves, R-Kanawha, was announced Thursday as the winner of the Republican primary for the 38th District seat in the House of Delegates.

Workers of the Kanawha County Voter’s Registration Office counted votes by hand Thursday during a special meeting of the Kanawha County Commission. Grave’s original margin of 84 votes decreased to 83 votes. Graves beat fellow Republican Cindy Farley.

“The purpose of this hand count was to meet the WV State Code concerning recounts and to provide public viewing of the recount,” Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper said. “The most important thing to me is to make sure the votes in this district were counted accurately and correctly.”

Graves lost two votes in Kanawha County, and Farley lost one vote.

The district is split between Kanawha and Putnam Counties. Graves carried Kanawha County by 520 votes.
