Kanawha murder case headed to grand jury

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Kanawha County grand jury will be the next stop for a murder case following a preliminary hearing in magistrate court Thursday afternoon.

A magistrate ruled there was not evidence to forward the charges against Amanda Belcher. She allegedly stabbed her husband in the throat during a domestic dispute at their Alum Creek home on May 20.

Deputies found the knife lodged in the neck of James Belcher when they arrived on the scene. He died a short time later.

A Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department detective testified at Thursday’s preliminary hearing that Belcher confessed to the crime.

She remains in the South Central Regional Jail without bail.
