Bridgeport sweeps AA with boys MVB Bank Champions Cup win

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va — Bridgeport’s Class AA boys MVB Bank Champions Cup win featured the most points earned by any school in all classes as the Indians swept the girls and boys Cup titles, which recognize overall athletic and academic success for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Bridgeport totaled 750 points overall (one more point than the Bridgeport girls) — the highest point total of any class, boys or girls. Still, the 77-point margin of victory over Fairmont Senior was also the closest of any class as well.

The Indians’ 2017-2018 athletic season featured an unprecedented fifth straight Class AA baseball title, to go along with a track state championship as well.

Bridgeport’s boys points breakdown: 

Baseball (state championship): 100 points

Track (state championship): 100 points

Graduation rate: 95 points

Golf: 95 points

Football: 94 points

Cross Country: 89 points

Swimming: 89 points

Basketball: 88 points

Total: 750 points

Behind runner-up Fairmont Senior (673 points), Winfield was third (655 points), followed by Lewis County (525.5) and East Fairmont (467) in the top five.

The MVB Bank Champions Cup, presented by the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC), recognizes the top performing high schools in the state for their overall athletic and academic achievement.

The recipients of the MVB Bank Champions Cups are selected by a point system that reward the top eight finishers in each state championship sanctioned by the WVSSAC.

Points are earned by finishing first (100), second (97), third (95), fourth (93), fifth (91), sixth (89), seventh (87) and eighth (85). Additional points are earned for the graduation rate of each school: 100%-97% (100 points), 96.99%-94% (97), 93.99%-91% (95), 90.99%-88% (93), 87.99%-85% (91), 84.99%-82% (89), 81.99%-79% (87) and 78.99%-76% (85).

Overall, 33 of the 44 Class AA schools scored points in the girls  MVB Bank Champions Cup Standings.

**Ravenswood (boys) and Charleston Catholic (girls) won the Class A Champions Cups. The Class AAA winners will be announced Thursday.
