BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Bridgeport added to its strong athletic year by sweeping the Class AA girls and boys MVB Bank Champions Cups, honoring schools for their academic and athletic prominence for the 2017-2018 year.
Looking at the girls’ win specifically, Bridgeport posted the largest win of any class, boys or girls, capturing the Cup with 164 more points than runner-up Winfield.
The Indians completed top eight finishes in seven of nine sports, to go along with a high graduation rate that brought in 95 points to the overall 749 point total.
Bridgeport’s overall girls athletic success this past year included a track state championship and second-place finish among AA schools in the swimming championships.

Track (state championship): 100 points
Swimming: 97 points
Graduation rate: 95 points
Tennis: 94 points
Volleyball: 94 points
Cross Country: 93 points
Basketball: 88 points
Softball: 88 points
Total: 749 points
Behind runner-up Winfield (585 points), Robert C. Byrd was third with 547 points, Fairmont Senior fourth with 379 points and Philip Barbour fifth with 377 points.
The MVB Bank Champions Cup, presented by the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC), recognizes the top performing high schools in the state for their overall athletic and academic achievement.
The recipients of the MVB Bank Champions Cups are selected by a point system that reward the top eight finishers in each state championship sanctioned by the WVSSAC.
Points are earned by finishing first (100), second (97), third (95), fourth (93), fifth (91), sixth (89), seventh (87) and eighth (85). Additional points are earned for the graduation rate of each school: 100%-97% (100 points), 96.99%-94% (97), 93.99%-91% (95), 90.99%-88% (93), 87.99%-85% (91), 84.99%-82% (89), 81.99%-79% (87) and 78.99%-76% (85).
Overall, 32 of the 44 Class AA schools scored points in the girls MVB Bank Champions Cup Standings.
**Ravenswood (boys) and Charleston Catholic (girls) won the Class A Champions Cups. The Class AAA winners will be announced Thursday.
