Logan County man jailed on charges he tried to drown his family

CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. — A Logan County man is behind bars on charges of trying to drown his wife and two children.

Deputies responded to the home on Old Logan Road Wednesday evening when a woman called 911 claiming her husband was trying to drown her and her two children, ages 3 and 6. Deputies arrived to find the woman outside, soaking wet, along with her two children who were crying. The victim claimed her husband, Leslie Kelly, 36, had dragged her and the children into their bathroom and held them under the waters of the tub.

Inside, deputies confronted Kelly and he admitted he was trying to “baptize” his family. He also admitted the children were kicking and screaming as he attempted to get them into the water. Puddles of water, articles of clothing, and evidence of a struggle were present throughout the house according to deputies.

Kelly was arrested and taken to jail. He faces three counts of domestic battery, three counts of attempted murder, and two counts of child abuse creating risk.
