CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia on Thursday extended scholarship offers to a pair of Kanawha Valley football standouts, including one prospect in the class of 2021.
Capital rising senior quarterback/defensive back Kerry Martin, Jr. and South Charleston rising sophomore defensive end Zeiqui Lawton both received offers from the Mountaineers.
Martin, 6-foot-2, 188 pounds, is coming off of a junior season where he threw for 2,532 yards and 32 touchdowns (8 interceptions), while rushing for another 1,072 yards and 17 more scores.
Some of Martin’s other offers include Marshall, Army, Cincinnati, Howard, Miami (OH), Rutgers, Toledo and Western Kentucky.
Coming off of a state semifinal berth from a season ago, Martin will lead a Capital team with big expectations this coming season.
Individually, Martin has also positioned himself as one of the early, preseason favorites to contend for the MetroNews Player of the Year and Kennedy Award.
Lawton, meanwhile, has seen his recruiting stock grow exponentially this summer, picking up early offers from Marshall and Eastern Kentucky.
Standing in at 6-foot-3, 238 pounds, Lawton as a freshman finished with 80 total tackles in 11 games for the Black Eagles.
Also on Thursday, South Charleston senior linebacker Drew Joseph, Lawton’s teammate, was offered a preferred walk-on spot with the Mountaineers as well.
