MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins said he has “no idea” about the timetable for point guard Brandon Knapper’s return.
In a story MetroNews broke this week, the redshirt freshman has been sidelined from basketball activities while doctors treat a pulmonary issue that created a blood clot. Sources said the program remains upbeat about Knapper being medically cleared before the season. The South Charleston High graduate is currently taking medication to treat the issue.
“I actually haven’t asked on purpose because we’ve got a ways to go before they do another checkup,” Huggins told MetroNews “Sportsline” in a follow-up interview.
Knapper, who turns 21 this fall, will be uncharacteristically mature for a redshirt freshman, having spent a year at prep school and another season recovering from a knee injury. He’s considered an important part of West Virginia’s point guard rotation.
“Just like everybody else, I’m sitting there thinking how good it would be if he plays,” said Huggins, adding that doctors have “got to wait it out, test, and then make an educated decision.”
