Lawmakers arrive in Charleston with loaded interim agendas

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Discussion scheduled by state lawmakers in the June interim committee meetings that begin Sunday at the state capitol will focus on recent controversies and timely issues in state government.

The Post Audits Subcommittee meets at 4 p.m. Sunday and on the agenda are audit reports on the RISE West Virginia long-term flood recovery program and the state Supreme Court. The committee will also receive a Homeland Security inventory update.

A meeting beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday will include a road construction update from state Transportation Secretary Tom Smith.

The Joint Committee on Finance meets Monday morning and will hear from state Lottery officials about the rules and regulations approved last Thursday for sports betting.

A Monday morning meeting of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary could begin the discussion on the legislature moving ahead with possible impeachment proceedings involving suspended state Supreme Court Justice Allen Loughry.

The Legislative Committee on Flooding is scheduled to meet Tuesday morning for an update on RISE West Virginia since Gov. Jim Justice appointed state Adjutant General Jim Hoyer to oversee the operation. Those who previously operated the program are also on the agenda for questioning.

Another meeting set for Tuesday will include state Auditor J.B. McCuskey giving a report on a recent discovery concerning nearly three years of rent paid by the state DHHR for space in Fairmont that it have vacated.
