CLENDENIN, W.Va. — Herbert Hoover softball coach Missy Smith this week joined the MetroNews ‘Statewide Sportsline’ after being named the MaxPreps National Softball Coach of the Year.
“It’s really a testament to the program and the girls,” Smith said. “I was pretty overwhelmed when I received the call and was told about the award.”
Smith led Herbert Hoover to a perfect 33-0 record this past season and a second straight Class AA state championship.
A strong core returns for next year behind West Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year Delani Buckner.
“Coaching at Hoover, we’ve always carried a target,” Smith said. “I was fortunate enough to take over a program that was always a competitor, teams liked to play well against and enjoy beating us. That target is not getting any smaller, the more games we win and the more state titles we’ve been able to finish off.”
Smith, individually, has put together quite the overall coaching resume herself, totaling seven state championships when combined with her four titles as the George Washington volleyball coach and three titles with Hoover softball.
“You can never have too many,” Smith said. “We’ll hopefully keep winning some more, that’s the goal.”
The complete interview with Smith is posted at the top of the page.
