Putnam County man struck and killed by train

SCOTT DEPOT, W.Va. — A Putnam County man is dead after he was run over by a train. The incident happened just before 9 p.m. Sunday.

“The train was to his rear and Mr. Smith had ear buds in listening to the radio,” Putnam County Sheriff Steve Deweese said. “I guess the radio was up too loud and where he was listening to the music he didn’t’ hear the conductor blow the air horn numerous times.”

The victim is Tyler Smith, 23, of Scott Depot.

The incident happened near the Beechwood Estates subdivision in Putnam County.
It’s not the first time such an incident has happened in and around the Putnam County area.

“That makes four that I recall in about five years,” said Deweese. “Pedestrians walking the track with ear buds and didn’t hear the train.”

It is considered trespassing to walk on the railroad. Putnam County deputies will issue citations if you are on the tracks as will CSX Railroad Police who patrol the tracks regularly.
