8-year-old child injured in Monongalia County shooting

MONONGALIA COUNTY, W.Va. — An 8-year-old girl was shot in the head Friday night when a gun discharged through a wall at her home in Rolling Hills Village.

The girl’s condition was not available at press time.

According to MECCA 911 dispatchers, a 9mm hollow-point round went through a wall and struck the girl behind the right ear. The gun was recovered on the bedroom floor, MECCA informed responders who were summoned at 6:38 p.m. to community off Cheat Road.

Neighbors said Kristie Neely and her three daughters — 8-year-old twins and a younger child — live in the home.

“Great people, wonderful people, friendly,” Dot Shumiloff said.

She said the three girls play with her grandchild and the community is “like a family.”

Neighbors said the family has endured tragedy of late. Neely’s husband, CJ, passed away July 6 and her father James Harper was buried Thursday.

The family has lived at the home for about a year, said said another neighbor, Thelma Lipscomb.

Neither neighbor reported hearing a shot.

The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department, Mon Health EMS and Cheat Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded.

On-scene deputies referred all comments to the shift supervisor, who did not immediately return a call seeking details.
