Former correctional officer sentenced for having sex with inmate

BECKLEY, W.Va. — A former correctional officer at Southern Regional Jail in Raleigh County has been sentenced for a 2016 incident with a female inmate.

Jefferey Pettry, 29 of Beaver, was on duty at the time of the events. He later confessed the action to West Virginia State Police. He was charged with imposition of sexual acts on an incarcerated person.

“This crime involved a violation of trust,” said Judge Robert Burnside Jr. during Pettry’s Thursday sentencing in Raleigh County Circuit Court.

Pettry was sentenced to 10 years of close supervision and 36 months of probation. If he violates those terms, he could face 1-5 years in prison.

Pettry was also listed in a July lawsuit filed in Kanawha County Circuit Court for allegedly sexually harassing another female inmate.
