Huntington’s Dawson commits to Akron

Mikal Dawson gave a verbal commitment to the University of Akron.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Mikal Dawson, a former Huntington High School standout and captain of last season’s West Virginia Sports Writers Association’s Class AAA all-state first team, announced Sunday his commitment to the University of Akron.

In a tweet, Dawson wrote, “Very excited to announce that I’ve committed to The University of Akron #GoZips.”

In June, Dawson signed with Huntington Prep’s post-graduate program to reclassify for the class of 2019.

As a senior at Huntington High, Dawson averaged 20 points and eight rebounds, which followed a junior campaign in which he averaged 22 points for the Highlanders’ Class AAA state championship team.

Former Huntington Prep head coach Rob Fulford is an assistant coach at Akron.
