MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Another Smith, another safety commitment for West Virginia.
Rivals three-star recruit Osita Smith of Columbia, Md., pledged Thursday over offers from Boston College, Purdue, Wake Forest, Indiana, Rutgers and Cincinnati.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder announced his intentions exactly one week after the Mountaineers gained a commitment from safety Tykee Smith of Philadelphia.
Now 16 commitments strong, West Virginia’s 2019 class currently ranks 37th nationally, per Rivals.
Osita Smith projects a mix of range and physicality to play the Spur safety in Tony Gibson’s 3-3-5 stack.
“The coaching staff was impressed with his ability to cover as well as come up and play in the box,” said Rivals writer Keenan Cummings. “He’s a wide receiver at the high school level, and in college he’ll be fast enough to cover downfield.”
West Virginia running backs coach Marquel Blackwell served as Smith’s lead recruiter.
A third safety in this class, Capital High’s Kerry Martin. committed July 28.
