No. 11 Hoyas deal West Virginia women another shutout

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – No. 17 West Virginia continued its offensive malaise in a 2-0 loss to No. 11 Georgetown on Sunday at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

The Mountaineers (1-2-3) were shut out for the third time in six matches, while the Hoyas (4-0-2) capitalized on a chance from Meaghan Nally in the 35th minute. Kyra Carusa added an insurance goal in the 76th minute.

“This was a great win on the road against a top program in West Virginia,” said Hoyas coach Dave Nolan. “They put us under real pressure at moments in the game and I thought the girls worked so hard to limit their chances.

“On the other side, we always carried a threat when we attacked. We scored off a corner kick and then Kyra scored an incredible second goal for us which killed the game.”

Both teams managed 14 shots.

“We had some bad moments today, and you can’t have bad moments against a top team like this,” said WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “I’m going to lean on my upperclassmen, and I know they’re going to respond.”

A Hoyas corner kick in the 35th minute produced confusion in the box. The Mountaineers blocked three shot attempts — the last of which bounced to the feet of Nally, who placed her shot toward the upper-left pocket.
