House fire claims 3 lives in Weirton

WEIRTON, W.Va. — Three people were killed in a house fire in Weirton early Sunday morning, authorities said.

The blaze was first reported at about 3:30 a.m. at a two-story house on Paul Avenue.

According to authorities, a woman was pronounced dead at the scene and two men died later at Weirton Medical Center.

The victims tried to escape from a second story window but were overcome by flames and heat.

Weirton Fire Chief Jeffery Shumate told WTOV-TV flames were shooting through the roof and upstairs windows when fire crews arrived on the scene.

The names of the victims have not been released. The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
