West Virginia soldier killed in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON — An Army soldier from Taylor County died Monday from what the U.S. Department of Defense describes as “wounds sustained from small arms fire.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy Bolyard, 42, of Thornton, died in the Logar province of Afghanistan during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

According to Stars and Stripes, Bolyard died from wounds in an attack shortly after a security meeting at an Afghan National Army Base. The publication described the incident as an “insider attack.”

Bolyard’s death is the sixth American fatality in Afghanistan this year. He was the second American service member killed this year in a suspected insider attack.

According to Newsweek, Bolyard was a six-time recipient of the Bronze Star. Three of the awards were for valor.
