Charleston man convicted on 25 sex-related counts

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Kanawha County jury deliberated for less than 90 minutes Thursday afternoon before finding a Charleston man guilty on 25 counts of sexual assault and sexual abuse involving two young boys.

Jeffrey Phipps

The panel of 8-men and 4-women convicted Jeffrey Thomas Phipps, 47, on all counts following a four-day trial.

The victims, now 9 and 6, both testified earlier this week that Phipps, who knew the family, assaulted them in a house in Charleston’s East End two years ago. Phipps, who testified in his own defense Wednesday, denied the charges.

Phipps could be sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison. Kanawha County Circuit Judge Dan Greear is expected to schedule the sentencing for late October.

Phipps remains in the South Central Regional Jail.
