As water settlement checks go out, police urge caution

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — No situation ever goes unnoticed by a criminal element and the Charleston Police Chief fears many residents of his city are ripe for the picking.

“Almost any mailbox could be a jackpot,” said Chief Steve Cooper.

He’s concerned as close to $73 Million in checks go into the mail all at one time, it could be a target of opportunity for thieves.

“We have folks who drive around and ride around on bicycles and go through people’s mail,” Cooper said. “With all of these checks going out at the same time, I think there’s a real threat at some of these begin stolen.”

Cooper suggests knowing when your mail arrives and being there to get it immediately today or tomorrow. If you can’t be there, he suggest making arrangements to insure somebody you trust is three to get it if you don’t have a locked mailbox.

“After what we all went through the water crises, we don’t’ want somebody going through additional trauma with having this money stolen from them,” he said.
