Former Mason County sheriff sentenced after stealing historic gun

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A former Mason County Deputy Sheriff will spend time in prison after stealing a World War II-era firearm.

Terry Lee Powell, 42, pleaded guilty in June to taking a Luger 9mm pistol during an investigation in Ashton. He then sold the firearm for $2,500.

The man who bought the gun, Eugene Asbury, of Gallipolis Ferry, later pleaded guilty to federal drug trafficking and money laundering charges. He was sentenced to 63 months in prison. West Virginia State Police found the gun while conducting a search warrant at Asbury’s residence.

Powell was sentenced Tuesday to five months in prison, followed by six months of home confinement.
