Division of Highways set to host hiring event

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Division of Highways will be holding a hiring event on Friday, September 21 at it’s District 2 headquarters in Cabell County.

The event will take place at 901 Madison Avenue in Huntington from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The five counties in this district include Cabell, Wayne, Mingo, Lincoln, and Logan.

“There are vacancies and there are retirements, that’s all the time,” said Leslie Adkins, job recruiter for the state Division of Highways, of the openings. “We’ve got a lot of road construction going on in all these counties so we’re in need of these job skills.”

The hiring event for the entire district is focusing on Transportation Worker 1, 2 & 3 Equipment Operator, Transportation Worker 2 & 3 Equipment Repair to serve as a Mechanic and Transportation 3 Crew Chief to serve as a Supervisor.

“We’ve had different hiring times with different hires,” Adkins said. “Some have been only a 30-day turn around from the event. Some have taken just a little more time.”

“These have been very successful events for us and we are filling vacancies.”

Adkins advised potential candidates to visit www.personnel.wv.gov for a printable job application, or to apply online before the event. She also said if an application is completed online before the hiring event, print out the application and bring it to the event.

Adkins said these events are one stop shops for potential candidates.

“Their application is going to be reviewed by the personnel specialist here and then they are going to go to division of personnel, making sure they qualify for certain positions. Potential candidates can hear about benefits, apprenticeships and our tier program about increasing pay every ten months. Some of the drug tested positions will be drug tested that day as well.”

A Commercial Driver’s License is required for some positions. Call the West Virginia Division of Highways at 304-558-3111 or visit www.personnel.wv.gov for more details on the event.
