LUBBOCK, Texas — Lauren Segalla snapped a scoreless tie in the 47th minute as West Virginia upset No. 22 Texas Tech 2-0 on Friday night in their Big 12 women’s soccer opener.
Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel added her team-high fourth goal in the 64th minute, connecting on a penalty kick after Hannah Abraham was pulled down inside the box.
The Red Raiders’ (8-2, 0-1 Big 12) had gone 5-0 at home to start the season.
It marked the third straight shutout by the Mountaineers (5-2-3, 1-0), who were the near-consensus preseason pick to win the conference but struggled against some top competition.
“It was a tough nonconference schedule. We took some lumps early, but they paid off tonight for us,” said WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “I’m so proud of this team – they stuck to the game plan. Each and every one of them did their job to stop a prolific scoring team like Texas Tech. Tonight is a huge accomplishment for this team.”
The WVU defense continued its stellar streak by denying the Red Raiders a shot on-goal. Texas Tech entered the match with an 8.89 shots on-goal average.
West Virginia’s Rylee Foster played all 90 minutes in net for her fourth shutout of the season.
“Our team is resilient,” said Texas Tech coach Tom Stone. “They’re not happy about the result and they’re not happy about the way we played, but they’re also excited that we’re in the Big 12 season.”
