Beckley man charged with firing a gun on Rails to Trails

BECKLEY, W.Va. — A Beckley man was arrested Sunday for allegedly firing a gun at another man on the Rails to Trails in Raleigh County.

According to Police, the incident occurred on the trail early Sunday afternoon. A Beckley Police officer responding to a call of shots fired located the suspect, Duane Edward Grimes, 30, walking on the trail toward the Beckley Fire Station.

The officer said Grimes denied he was carrying a weapon, but a search of his person revealed a loaded semiautomatic pistol.

Police also located a man near the trail who positively identified Grimes as the person who shot at him. He said he didn’t know the suspect and only came into contact with him after asking Grimes for a cigarette. He told investigators Grimes then ordered him to lie down. The victim said he then fled, and heard two gunshots being fired.

Grimes was charged with Wanton Endangerment, and was taken to Southern Regional Jail.
