New state field office for veterans opens in Wheeling

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Veterans in West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle now have access to a new field office in Ohio County offering services from the West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance.

VA Cabinet Secretary Dennis Davis was part of Tuesday morning’s grand opening of the Wheeling Field Office, a replacement facility located at 1082 East Bethlehem Boulevard in Wheeling.

Previously, “The veterans here in the Wheeling area had an office that really did not meet their needs. It was small. It was rather old and it was not inviting,” Secretary Davis told MetroNews after Tuesday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“A lot of veterans, we believe, were not taking advantage of the services and the opportunities and the benefits that are available to them.”

The Wheeling site serves the counties of Marshall, Ohio, Brooke, Hancock and Wetzel.

“We need to have something here for these veterans,” Davis said.

“If you live in the Panhandle, to drive down into the heart of, say down into Morgantown or Parkersburg, it would discourage too many of the veterans from doing that.”

At the Wheeling location, employees are trained to provide free help to veterans and their dependents with applications for state and federal benefits.

In all, the WVDVA operates 17 field and claims offices.

For Wheeling, “We are glad to put this one in here. We’re excited about it and the facilities are outstanding,” Secretary Davis said.
