HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Former Marshall University quarterback Michael Payton died Thursday following a battle with cancer.
Payton led the Thundering Herd to the Division I-AA Championship in 1992 and received the Walter Payton Award that same year.
He is also a member of the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Thundering Herd great Michael Payton,” Marshall athletic director Mike Hamrick said on Twitter. “An All-American and a member of the Marshall Athletics and College Football Halls of Fame, his loss will he [sic.] felt by so many.”
