Marshall at Old Dominion: How they scored

SECOND QUARTER

Marshall: Anthony Anderson 22-yard run (14:00)

Thundering Herd started the drive at its own 12 after Malik Gant picked off a pass tipped at the line of scrimmage for his first career interception. Alex Thomson completed passes of 19 and 23 yards to Marcel Williams and Willie Johnson. Herd leads 7-0

Marshall: Alex Thomson 3-yard pass to Tyre Brady (8:33)

Brady made a great high-point grab on a corner route in the back left corner of the end zone over Joe Joe Headen. Artie Henry converted a fourth-and-4 on a slant to keep the drive alive just outside the red zone. Just three plays later, Brady drew a pass interference from Geronda Hall to set Marshall up at the three-yard line. Herd leads 14-0

Old Dominion: Nick Rice 30-yard field goal (00:23)

Blake LaRussa scrambled for five yards on fourth-and-one and then hooked up Will Knight for 18-yards on third-and-10. The Herd defense held on and allowed just one more first down before taking a timeout when the Monarchs kept the offense on the field for a fourth-and-two, which then prompted the field goal try from Rice. Herd leads 14-3

THIRD QUARTER

Marshall: Anthony Anderson 4-yard run untouched up the middle (5:31)

Tyre Brady hauled in a one-handed catch on a 33-yard pass from Alex Thomson after the Herd’s offensive line gave Thomson the time he needed to find Brady wide open on the left sideline. Anthony Anderson followed that grab with a 13-yard run for back-to-back first downs.Herd leads 21-3

Old Dominion: Blake LaRussa 1-yard pass to Travis Fulgham (3:29)

Fulgham made a great over-the-shoulder catch against Malik Gant for the score on third down-and-goal. Monarchs get 50 yards on the first two plays of the drive on throws of 29 and 21 yards from LaRussa to Donta Anthony and Fulgham to quickly get into Herd territory. Two plays later Will Knight carries it 12 yards to the Marshall 6-yard line. Herd leads 21-10

FOURTH QUARTER

Old Dominion: Nick Rice 41-yard field goal (12:40)

LaRussa hits Keion White for 27 yards on a seam route. After two straight incompletions, LaRussa goes back to the air for three-straight first downs on gains of 11, 16 and 10 to White, Kesean Strong and Isaiah Harper respectively. LaRussa couldn’t finish the drive for the Monarchs though, leaving a throw long down the left sideline searching for a wide open Jonathan Duhart. Herd leads 21-13

Marshall: Anthony Anderson 4-yard run (7:08)

The Herd’s previous drive stalled, but thanks to a great punt from Robert LeFevre that pinned ODU at its own five the defense forced a three and out and a Monarchs punt from in their own end zone. From there the Herd got it done on the ground, starting with a 29-yard run by Tyler King to open the drive. King totaled three carries for 39 yards on the drive before Anderson punched in the score. Herd leads 28-13

Old Dominion: Blake LaRussa 16-yard pass to Kesean Strong (5:01)

Marshall gave Old Dominion two free first downs via penalty, where both plays result would have brought up third down for the Monarchs. LaRussa converted on a third-and-six with a 12-yard pass to Jonathan Duhart to keep the drive alive two plays after the first penalty against the Herd. Herd leads 28-20

Marshall: Tyler King 65-yard run (3:05)

Alex Thomson fit a pass into a tight window to find Artie Henry for the first down right at the marker on third-and-six. King was forced to bounce the run farther outside off the left side of the line than he wanted, but it paid off after slipping out of a shoestring tackle in the backfield and then put a stutter-step move on a defensive back before breaking the run wide open. King was then called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the score for summersaulting in the back of the end zone. Herd leads 35-20

Marshall: Tyler King 46-yard run (1:53)

What appeared to be a game-ending drive with the Herd trying to run out the clock, Tyler King decided he wanted to add more points on the scoreboard. Following the timeout from ODU, King took the hand-off and went between his right guard and tackle to find pay dirt. King was only touched briefly by two Monarch players as he sprinted by the defense. Herd leads 42-20
