Coal miner dead following incident at Greenbrier County mine

GREENBRIER COUNTY, W.Va. — A coal miner is dead following an incident Wednesday at a surface mine in Greenbrier County.

The state Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training confirmed the death of Roger Herndon of Rainelle.

According to officials, Herndon, 33, worked at the Princess Polly Anna & JCT Enterprises LLC, Surface Mine #1 as an auger helper.

Preliminary information shows Herndon sustained injuries after being struck by a piece of auger drill steel.

He was transported to Humana Hospital where he died.

“We are deeply saddened and heartbroken today to learn that West Virginia has lost one of our coal miners. We ask you to join us as we pray for the family, friends and co-workers of Roger W. Herndon of Rainelle,” Gov. Jim Justice and First Lady Cathy Justice said in a statement.

The Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training is conducting an investigation.
