Raleigh County man accused of violently attacking his mother

MACARTHUR, W.Va. — A Beckley man was arrested after he allegedly attacked and injured his mother during the weekend.

Joseph Andrew Garris was charged with Malicious Wounding.  According to the criminal complaint, the incident happened Saturday on Hollywood Drive in MacArthur, where, according to sheriff’s deputies, Garris slammed his mother’s head into the asphalt pavement twice, then struck her with his fist several times.

The victim suffered a broken jaw, broken nose, and multiple facial fractures, including severe damage to both orbital sockets.  She was taken to a hospital in Charleston, and reportedly will need surgery.

The suspect was being held at Southern Regional Jail on a $75,000 bond.

The motive for the incident was unclear.
