Morgantown Police respond to weekend report of shots fired

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Officers of the Morgantown Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Chestnut Street and Wall Street just after midnight Sunday, according to a news release from the department.

As officers were attempting to respond to that area, crowds that were in line and congregating around Wall Street fled the area, knocking down barricades to leave the scene, the release said.

According to the release, one officer was entangled in a barricade during the response and knocked to the ground causing minor injuries.

During the investigation, officers recovered two .22 caliber shell casings. There were no reports of injuries, and there were no indications of any impact of any projectiles, the report said.

According to the release, there was a report of an individual brandishing a firearm near Belmar Avenue approximately 30 minutes prior to the incident. The individual reportedly attempted to force his way into a party.

Officers of the Morgantown Police Department and the WVU Police responded to this call and were attempting to identify and locate a suspect in this matter when the report of shots fired occurred. It is unknown if the two events are related.
