Driver charged in crash that led to DOT worker’s leg amputation

PRINCETON, W.Va. — A Bristol, Tennessee man has been arrested and charged in connection with a crash on Interstate 77 that resulted in the amputation of the legs of a Virginia Department of Transportation worker.

According West Virginia State Police, Mark Musselman is being charged with three misdemeanor offenses including reckless driving, improper approach of an emergency vehicle causing injury, and failure to obey traffic control lights.

Authorities say the incident occurred Tuesday morning, as the worker, identified as Justin Dawson, 24, of Hinton, was hit on the shoulder of the road on the West Virginia side of the East River Mountain Tunnel near mile marker. Dawson was on the shoulder of the road with VDOT workers helping a stranded vehicle when Musselman crashed into him and a VDOT truck.

Dawson was transported to a local hospital before being flown to a Charleston hospital.

An investigation into the crash continues as Musselman’s charges are all misdemeanor offenses, carrying a penalty of less than one year in jail.
